Mentors Response
The Mentors Response service provides a dignified, child-centred service for young people who find themselves displaced at short notice and need to be moved to a new home within days, or even hours. Response offers immediate solutions in emergency situations and utilises its remote situation to offer a stabilising service based on stimulating outdoor activities and more tranquil environmental pursuits.
Young people arrive in emotional turmoil, often presenting an angry face to the world concealing the sadness and confusion associated with rejection and failure.
They will normally remain with us for between 28 and 62 days at Mentors Response, a time where we work towards stabilising behaviour and restoring a sense of equilibrium. Our aim is to send young people away with some basic tools to help them to better manage their anger and emotions so that they don't find themselves suddenly on another emergency placement following an uncontrolled outburst.
- Therapeutic Crisis Intervention- all of our staff are fully trained therapeutic care workers and the home is run on a Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) model which is used as a pro-active intervention as well as offering management techniques for de-escalation.
- Adventure activity - relationships of trust in the adult and self-esteem are enhanced through shared activity and achievement. The physical stimulus also promotes well-being and provides an outlet for adrenalin, reducing cravings for harmful acts or self-medication.
- Energetic setting - the young person will spend their placement deep in the Snowdonia Mountains with abundant access to land and water based challenges suitable for every level.
- Sustainable solutions - by working closely with placing social workers, we identify suitable move-on solutions which will offer permanency. Whilst we cannot guarantee placement availability, we will always prioritise young people admitted to Mentors Response for longer term placements within the Bryn Melyn Group if this can best meet their identified needs.
